Good for single tracks but they cannot master an Album. They will catch all the silly mistakes people may make when mixing.Īutomatic tools can do a very good job with the right settings but common defaults will probably crush the dynamics (because that’s what some people/genres want). Because they really listen to the content of the songs and can balance multiple tracks in an album context. so I expect to be doing flawed, time-consuming mastering for the forseeable future.īottom line is a good Mastering Engineer gives the best results, as would be expected. What goes in is just as important as what comes out. Identify the overall character of your mix. I'm sure these services are fine and would probably do a better job than I do in many cases, because I'm just human and definitely not perfect. That way you’ll be able to keep your vision in mind as you listen critically. I've not used Landr or any of these services to master nor do I intend to. Not that that's always needed or desirable in every case. What AI probably isn't doing, which many mastering engineers do, is run the audio through multiple busses and massage those parallel paths to thicken the overall mix. Honestly nothing that AI can't easily do a good job of. even guys that have great hardware.Ī large part of a mastering engineer's job relates to proper EQ'ing and level matching tracks via LUF metering to meet the intended release formats. These days, using outrageously expensive hardware for OOTB mastering is completely optional, and a lot of working MEs are mastering ITB. ![]() It helps to have a well-treated room and a good set of full range speakers. Technique-wise, it's a lot less complex than mixing, but often requires more preciscion. Professional mastering kind of has this mystique that's built up over the years, but it's really not anything that someone who has the time to research the techniques (many of which are closely guarded) can't do themselves.
